Let's Get Into Deep Conditioning

Routine, Routine, Routine!

Like all good habits, deep conditioning is most effective when it's done routinely.

Deep conditioners can be purely moisturizing to combat dry and brittle hair or protein-based if your strands need a little extra strength.

Personally, I deep condition my hair with heat every single wash day. Deep conditioning with heat opens up the hair shaft which allows all of the beneficial components of your treatment to get in and nourish your strands from the inside out. This helps to prevent dryness, breakage and split ends by increasing your hair's strength, elasticity and manageability.

Some other benefits of deep conditioning include:

  • Preventing hair damage
  • Revitalizing your hair
  • Restoring your hair's natural shine
  • Making your hair softer, silkier and smoother
  • Easing the detangling process
  • Protecting color-treated and heat-treated hair

How to deep condition:

Cleanse your hair and scalp thoroughly before deep conditioning. Your hair should be free from all product buildup, environmental pollutants and heavy oils. This will make the application a lot easier, more effective and well worth the time spent!

Be sure to work your deep conditioner into all sections of your hair. It's best to work in sections to ensure that all strands are coated evenly — this will make detangling easier as well. Pay special attention to the ends of your hair, since that the oldest part of your hair and often requires the most care.

After applying your deep conditioner, cover your hair with a plastic cap and leave it in for a while. I like to sit under my hooded drier for 20-30 minutes and allow the deep conditioner to really work its magic. Some other options include using a hair drier to apply indirect heat, working out to raise internal heat, using a hair steamer or applying a thermal cap.

Lastly, try to use cooler water when rinsing out the deep conditioning treatment. This will help your cuticles to start closing and locking in all of that moisture and love!
